The Town of Gibsons is a compact municipality of just over 4 square kilometres and 4,500 residents, and the commercial and services centre for over 13,000 people in the town and its adjacent rural areas of the Sunshine Coast Regional District.
As of the 2011 Canada Census, the median age on the Sunshine Coast was 51.6; significantly higher than the Provincial median of 41.9 years. The large population over 55 years (44%) is due to the attractiveness of the Sunshine Coast for “foot loose” businesses and retirees. The population of the entire Sunshine Coast grew 3.1 percent between 2006 and 2011. The population of the Town of Gibsons grew 6.1 percent during the same period.
